Asbestos Claims rise to over £10million from Exposure in School Buildings!
BBC news have uncovered that over the last 10 years, 32 councils have settled claims in relation to asbestos exposure in schools. Former teachers, maintenance workers, school staff and pupils have been exposed to deadly asbestos fibres and brought claims against various schools leading to pay-outs rising to at least 10 million pounds.
Unfortunately this comes as no surprise to us here at GMS LAW as we have dealt with many claims against various schools throughout England that have exposed our clients to asbestos. In the last few years, Senior Solicitor Stephanie Mort has settled claims for clients exposed to asbestos in schools achieving settlements of £16,500.00 and £18,000.00 respectively.
Statistics according to the National Union of Teachers
According to the National Union of Teachers, up to 300 adults die every year due to exposure to asbestos in school buildings. The scary thing is, majority of people exposed to broken asbestos in schools may not even realise that they have been exposed to asbestos as it can be very difficult to identify unless you know what you are looking for. For example, asbestos is not only used as insulation on boilers and pipes, it can also be used in ceiling tiles or floor tiles, or even around the edge of some doors. Therefore, this deadly substance can be extremely difficult to spot and many people do not realise they have been exposed.
As part of the BBC’s investigation into asbestos in schools, the Freedom of Information Act was used to obtain details about the level of the problem which confirmed that in England alone, there are at least 12,600 council run schools where asbestos is known to be present. Often, parents, school staff members and children are none the wiser that they are potentially being exposed to this deadly substance.
Ban on the use of Asbestos was enforced in 1999
You might be surprised to learn that it was only in 1999 that a complete ban on the use of asbestos was enforced within the United Kingdom. This is despite the fact that the Government have known that asbestos was seriously harmful to humans since the turn of the century. Fortunately, the Government have said that it is investing 23 billion to improve school buildings. Many, however, argue that not enough is being done to protect our children. The 23 billion investment in school buildings will take place over the course of the next few years with the aim that school buildings be improved by 2021.
