What is mesothelioma?
Hearing that you are suffering with mesothelioma is perhaps the most shocking diagnosis that a person or a family can receive. The knowledge that this disease has probably been caused by exposure to asbestos whilst at work can be devastating.
The asbestos disease mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust. It occurs either in the lungs or abdomen, and attacks the mesothelial layer which covers the outside of most of our vital organs. When it is centred in the lungs, mesothelioma can cause breathing difficulties.
Once it becomes evident enough to be diagnosed, the illness is anticipated to last for between 6 months and 3 years. Sadly, at this time, the result is invariably fatal.
Although the dangers of asbestos have been known about for many years now, new cases are still coming to light. This is because Mesothelioma can incubate (called a latency period) for between 10 and 50 years.
How is mesothelioma caused?
Mesothelioma is the most serious asbestos disease and almost certainly results from asbestos exposure in a work place environment.
It is usual for there to have been extensive exposure over several years, usually in the construction or ship building industry as a lagger, de-lagger or asbestos sprayer. However, Mesothelioma can result from very low levels of exposure.
One of our clients was an insurance officer worker. He used to visit the insurance company’s head office for monthly consultations with colleagues. But, tragically, these visits took place at a time when construction work had disturbed the asbestos in the fabric of the building. He contracted mesothelioma from this exposure which took place approximately 30 years before his diagnosis.
Establishing a claim
In order to successfully bring a No-Win-No-Fee mesothelioma claim it is important to identify how the exposure occurred. The first part of our role is to help you to recall where you may have encountered asbestos and to put it in the context of your work place environment.
Mesothelioma compensation in excess of £50,000 and often over £100,000 depending upon the age of the injured party, the level of disability, and the length of the illness.
This level of compensation is for the pain, suffering and ‘loss of enjoyment’. You will also need advice about other financial losses, such as compensation for loss of earnings, travel, care and nursing – even if you do not pay for this because your loved ones are helping you.
